Reflection

All in all, I enjoyed this module. What I liked is that with all the reading, activities and research I’ve done, I’ve started to develop my own ideas and own intuition about the topic.

My closing thought is that I should hold on to my own perspectives and use them to stimulate discussion, even if they’re not the most robust and well-researched ideas out there (yet). I have two novel perspectives: one is that “security is a habit” because it requires active, consistent, and ongoing mental effort. The other is that security can be thought of as a neverending battle between attackers and defenders. Knowing that security can be a game of attrition, can help organizations in the long term. These ideas were informed by my experiences, so I don’t really have sources or justifications for them. That said, I feel that they could still be of value.

What I want to do with these thoughts, is find out how they play out in the real world. It’s tempting to dismiss them because they’re not academically justified, but they’re what I’ve concluded from my experiences. Rather than lose my own intuitions, I should instead seek to use them to contribute to the wider discussions that academics have. I strongly believe that this is something that will help me find a good topic and create a high-quality dissertation.
